The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is a set of K-12 science education standards developed in the United States to provide a cohesive and internationally competitive science education framework. NGSS was created to improve science education by emphasizing a deeper understanding of scientific concepts, critical thinking, and hands-on learning. Here are the key aspects and components of NGSS:
- Three-Dimensional Learning: NGSS incorporates a three-dimensional approach to learning, which includes three core dimensions:
- Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs): These are the foundational scientific concepts and principles that students should learn within each grade level. They are organized into four domains: physical science, life science, Earth and space science, and engineering, technology, and applications of science.
- Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs): These describe the skills and practices that scientists and engineers use to investigate and solve real-world problems. They include skills such as asking questions, planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing data, and constructing explanations.
- Crosscutting Concepts (CCCs): These are overarching ideas that connect different scientific disciplines and help students make connections across various science topics. They include ideas such as systems and models, energy and matter, cause and effect, and scale.
- Grade-Level Performance Expectations (PEs): NGSS defines what students should know and be able to do at each grade level (K-12) by combining the three dimensions mentioned above. Each PE is a specific learning outcome that integrates content, practices, and concepts.
- Coherence and Progression: NGSS is designed to ensure that science education builds on prior knowledge and skills in a coherent and progressive manner. The standards are organized by grade level and span multiple grade bands (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12), providing a clear pathway for students as they advance through their education.
- Real-World Relevance: NGSS emphasizes the application of scientific knowledge to real-world situations and issues. This approach encourages students to engage in scientific inquiry and problem-solving to address complex problems.
- Engineering Integration: NGSS incorporates engineering practices and concepts alongside traditional science topics. This inclusion highlights the importance of engineering in solving real-world problems and encourages students to think like engineers.
- State Adoption: The NGSS serves as a framework for science education, but individual U.S. states have the authority to adopt, adapt, or modify these standards to suit their specific educational needs. As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, many states had adopted NGSS or were in the process of doing so.
Here are some of the benefits of the NGSS:
- They are more rigorous and demanding, which will prepare students for college and careers in STEM fields.
- They focus on the process of science, which will help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- They are more in line with the science standards of other countries, which will help students be competitive in the global economy.
Here are some of the challenges of the NGSS:
- They are more demanding, which may require more resources and support from schools and teachers.
- They are a new set of standards, which may take time for teachers to learn and implement.
- There is some resistance to the standards from some parents and educators.
As of March 2023, 27 US states have adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These states are:

The remaining 23 states have not yet adopted the NGSS. However, many of these states are in the process of doing so.

The NGSS are a significant departure from previous science standards in the United States. They are more rigorous and demanding, and they focus more on the process of science than on the memorization of facts. The NGSS is also more in line with the science standards of other countries.
